What are research peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids joined by peptide bonds — chemically the same class of building blocks that make up proteins, but far smaller. In a laboratory context, a "research peptide" is a synthetically produced peptide of defined sequence supplied to qualified researchers for in-vitro and other controlled laboratory work.

Peptides vs. proteins

The distinction is largely one of length. Chains of roughly two to fifty amino acids are generally described as peptides; longer, folded chains are described as proteins. Because peptide sequences are short and well defined, they can be manufactured synthetically with high reproducibility from lot to lot.

How research peptides are made

Most research peptides are produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS). Amino acids are added one at a time to a growing chain anchored to a solid resin, with protecting groups preventing unwanted side reactions at each coupling step. Once the sequence is complete, the peptide is cleaved from the resin, deprotected, and purified — typically by preparative reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

The purified material is then lyophilized (freeze-dried) into a stable powder and sealed in sterile vials under controlled conditions.

How purity is verified

Two analytical techniques carry most of the weight. HPLC separates the sample into its components and reports the target peak as a percentage of total area — this is the "purity" figure you see quoted, commonly ≥98% for research-grade material. Mass spectrometry confirms identity by measuring the molecular mass of the compound and comparing it to the theoretical mass of the intended sequence.

Handling and storage

Lyophilized peptides are generally stored sealed and frozen, protected from light and moisture. Once reconstituted, stability drops considerably and material is typically kept refrigerated and used within a short window. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles degrade many sequences. Always follow your own institution's protocols and the specifications on the lot's certificate of analysis.
